Menir do Outeiro
It is a large isolated menhir with a phallic profile.
–
Identified in 1969 by Henrique Leonor Pina and José Pires Gonçalves, the menhir was re-erected in 1970 and received status as a National Monument in 1971. It measures 5.6m in height and weighs around 8 tonnes. At the top is a depression about 30cm in diameter. Given the menhir’s phallic profile, one can interpret this depression as a representation of the urethra.
Countless are the menhirs that more or less explicitly represent phalluses. This phallic representation links with the notion of fertility, with phallic menhirs symbolising the fertilisation of the earth in association with human and animal fertilisation and renewal. It is a symbol typical of communities increasingly dependent on an agricultural and pastoral economy. This symbolism could also be associated with meanings resulting from the previous perceptions of the places chosen for these monoliths or from relationships with other elements of the terrestrial or even celestial landscape, which are difficult or impossible to understand today.
It has been re-erected.
