JUROMENHA 1
An enclosure with a length of more than 260 metres, whose overall image was impossible to obtain.
It has three ditches, and there are some clusters of pits, particularly to the northwest, between ditches 2 and 3.
The outermost ditch runs in a spiral, giving this enclosure a distinct configuration.
It consists of two internal enclosures formed by ditches with irregular sinuosity, featuring some lobes. Between these two ditches, at least two other radial ditches share this intermediate space, a situation uncommon in Alentejo enclosures. Outside these two enclosures, a third ditch, which develops in a spiral shape, starts next to the second one, skirting it to the east and south and ending at the stream, forming a peculiar plan. This third ditch also has an irregular sinuosity with some spaced lobes. There is a visible entrance in ditch 2, facing north, and another in the innermost ditch, facing east. The site underwent excavations in 1998 during the construction of the Alqueva dam project, in which the outermost ditch, which has a ‘V’ profile 2.5 metres wide and 1.7 metres deep, was surveyed.
Inside the ditch were large fragments of ceramic containers and abundant remains of domestic (cattle, sheep, pigs, rabbits, dogs) and wild (horses, deer, hares, amphibians) fauna. A ceramic fragment depicting a human nose and possible eye, part of an anthropomorphic vessel, was found at the surface.
The topographical location of this site is exceptional among Alentejo enclosures. It sits in a flat area and very close to a large river (the Guadiana), next to the mouth of one of its subsidiary streams in a partially flooded zone. Ditched enclosures appear in diverse areas: flat tops of more or less prominent headlands, gentle slopes, flat areas, amphitheatre basins or open valleys crossed by streams. The case of Juromenha 1 is distinctive but may be comparable to that of the Águas Frias enclosure (from the same period and also in Alandroal), located next to the Lucefécit stream, where its ditches seem to end. However, it stands at the foot of a large hill (where the Juromenha Fortress is), a choice of location with poor visibility over the surrounding landscape. Contrarily, the elevation has total visibility over the enclosure, a situation that is also unique in the realm of Alentejo enclosures.
