Anta 2 da Comenda
A dolmen with a chamber and corridor to which a tholos was attached.
Its level of preservation makes it possible to see both monuments.
A dolmen with a total length of 6.20m. A polygonal chamber with six pillars (all in situ) measuring 3×2.2m in diameter and a 3m long partitioned corridor. The antechamber has a wide pillar on each side with an “open” sealing slate slab and an external section with two small pillars on each side, with the entrance closed by a slate slab. This partition may correspond to two distinct construction moments. The tholos leans against the pillars on the left side of the dolmen, aligning with the entrance to that previous monument. It has an ellipsoidal chamber measuring 3.5×2.8m, which, right next to the dolmen, consists of granite blocks, while the remaining space comprises schist slabs. Inside, it preserved traces of the demolished false dome. The corridor measures 1.8m and comprises small granite blocks. The excavations revealed that both monuments had been heavily disrupted and provided similar material: geometric stones, arrowheads, blades, necklace beads, blades and some slate slabs with geometric decoration. There were also some human remains.
First appearing in Alentejo in the 3rd millennium BC (Chalcolithic), a tholos (plural tholoi) is a funerary monument featuring a false dome covering. The circular dome consists of rows of overlapping stones that come closer together until the top is closed by a slab, the dome never being complete. These rows of stone likely started from the base, forming the structure’s walls and rising to the covering through the final slab, or the walls had a first coating of vertical slabs (usually made of schist), from which the rest of the ceiling rises to a false dome. The tholos of Comenda 2 would be of the latter type.
Archaeological excavation carried out by German archaeologists Vera and Georg Leisner in the mid-20th century.
